What Is Tai Chi?
Understanding the Traditional Art and Its Benefits
Tai Chi, also known as Taijiquan or Tai Chi Chuan, is a traditional Chinese martial art that combines slow, flowing movements with relaxed breathing, good posture, and mental focus. Originally developed as a system of self-defence, it is now practised around the world for its many physical and mental wellbeing benefits.
Unlike high-impact forms of exercise, Tai Chi uses gentle, controlled movements that are suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels. Regular practice can help improve balance, coordination, flexibility, strength, posture, and body awareness. Many people also find that it promotes relaxation and helps them manage the stresses of everyday life.
At the heart of Tai Chi is the traditional Chinese concept of Chi (or Qi), often described as the body's vital life energy. The movements are designed to encourage smooth, relaxed and coordinated motion, allowing the body to move efficiently and without unnecessary tension. Whether you view Chi as a traditional philosophy or as a way of describing healthy movement and breathing, Tai Chi provides a practical way to develop both body and mind.
At Wensum Kung Fu & Tai Chi, we teach Yang Style Tai Chi, the most widely practised style in the world. Renowned for its smooth, graceful movements and emphasis on relaxation, balance, and correct body mechanics, Yang Style is suitable for beginners while offering a lifetime of learning and refinement.
Our Head Coach, Alasdair Monteith, learned Yang Style Tai Chi directly from our Grandmaster, Teng Wie Yoo, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. We are proud to preserve this traditional lineage while combining it with modern coaching methods, creating welcoming and supportive classes where every student can learn and progress with confidence.
