What is Chi?
Understanding the Energy Behind Tai Chi
If you've ever watched a Tai Chi demonstration or spoken to someone who practises Chinese martial arts, you've probably heard the word Chi (also spelled Qi, and pronounced "chee"). But what does it actually mean?
In traditional Chinese philosophy, Chi is often described as the body's vital life energy or life force. It is believed to flow through the body, supporting health, balance, and wellbeing. The idea of Chi has been part of Chinese culture and medicine for thousands of years and forms the foundation of practices such as Tai Chi, Qigong, and acupuncture.
From a modern perspective, people interpret Chi in different ways. Some view it as a literal form of energy, while others see it as a way of describing the connection between breathing, posture, relaxation, movement, and mental focus. Whatever your personal beliefs, the practical benefits of training remain the same.
When practising Tai Chi, students learn to move with good posture, controlled breathing, and relaxed, coordinated movements. These principles can improve balance, flexibility, body awareness, and concentration, while helping to reduce unnecessary tension.
At Wensum Kung Fu & Tai Chi, we encourage students to explore these traditional ideas with an open mind. Whether you think of Chi as energy, mindful movement, or simply good body mechanics, the goal is the same: to move more efficiently, feel more relaxed, and enjoy the many benefits that regular Tai Chi practice can bring.
