Seated Tai Chi in Dereham

Our Seated Tai Chi class in Dereham offers an accessible way to enjoy the benefits of Tai Chi for people who may find standing for a full class difficult, whether because of reduced mobility, balance problems, injury or other physical limitations.

The class provides an opportunity to enjoy gentle exercise, improve body awareness and coordination, and practise relaxation in a friendly, supportive environment.

What is Seated Tai Chi?

Tai Chi is traditionally practised standing, using slow, flowing movements that encourage the whole body to work together in a relaxed and coordinated way. However, many of its movements and principles can also be practised from a seated position.

Our classes are based on the principles of Tai Chi Qigong Shibashi, an accessible, therapeutic 18-movement routine that combines deep, rhythmic breathing with slow, continuous movements of the arms and torso, sometimes incorporating gentle leg extensions.

The movements are designed to encourage relaxation, coordination and comfortable movement. They can be adapted to suit individual needs and physical limitations, allowing students to participate at their own pace and within their own abilities.

We also incorporate elements of Neigong, or internal training, which uses controlled movement, breathing and focused attention to develop internal energy, body awareness and stamina.

Although the exercises are gentle, they provide a valuable opportunity to keep the body moving. Regular practice may help improve mobility, flexibility, coordination and posture, while the slow, focused movements can encourage relaxation and a sense of wellbeing.

Who is the Class For?

It may be particularly beneficial for:

  • Older adults who want to maintain mobility, coordination and independence.
  • People with reduced mobility or balance difficulties, including those who use walking aids or wheelchairs.
  • People recovering from a stroke, illness or injury who are looking for an appropriate form of gentle activity.
  • People living with long-term health conditions, fatigue or physical limitations that make standing exercise difficult.
  • Anyone who would prefer a gentler, seated approach to Tai Chi.

Exercises can be modified to accommodate different levels of ability, and students are encouraged to work comfortably within their own limits. Anyone recovering from a significant illness or injury should check with their healthcare professional that the class is suitable for them.

A Supportive Approach to Exercise

Our aim is to make traditional Tai Chi principles accessible to people who might otherwise find it difficult to participate in a regular class.

There is no pressure to keep up with others or perform movements perfectly. Students can take their time, rest when necessary and gradually develop their confidence and ability.

Above all, we want everyone to feel welcome and enjoy the experience of moving, breathing and learning together.
